  • Niepodległość

In Polish, niepodległość (nyeah-pohd-LIG-woshch) means independence.  On July 4th, we celebrate America's Independence Day ("Dzień Niepodległości").

Poland also has a day of independence, on November 11th ("jedenastego listopada").  This commemorates the day in 1918 that Poland became a free nation ("wolny kraj") following 123 years of division by its neighbors.

Poland also helped America to fight for freedom ("wolność") against Great Britain ("Wielka Brytania") in the 18th century.  Casimir Pulaski saved the life of George Washington in the Battle of Brandywine and became a general in the Continental Army.

In New York City, the Polish community honors General Pulaski in the annual Polish parade that is held in his name. Want to be a part of the parade this year? Check out pulaskiparade.org

  • Ojciec

In Polish, "ojciec" (OY-chets) means "father." In Poland, Father's Day ("Dzień Ojca") is celebrated each year on June 23, a week later than in the US. When speaking to your own father, you might call him dad ("tata" or "tatuś"). He is the husband ("mąż") to your mother ("matka").

Polish fathers are traditionally hard workers but also delight in spending time with their children ("dzieci"). Anecdotal evidence suggests that all types of fathers enjoy good food ("jedzenie"). If you're thinking of delighting a father, our online store has a number of father-approved items:
