Today's word is "pączek" (pon-tshek), plural "pączki" (pon-tschki). "Doughnut". A traditional pastry that is a staple in any Polish bakery since at least the Middle Ages. Made of a rich moist dough, fried and sprinkled with powdered sugar, icing or bits of dried orange skin. Most often stuffed with "powidło" (plum butter), rose hip jam, multifruit jelly, or Bavarian cream.
In Poland, pączki are eaten especially on Fat Thursday (the last Thursday before Lent), but many Polish Americans also celebrate on Fat Tuesday (the day before Ash Wednesday).
