Kapusta
Today's word is "kapusta" (kah-poos-tah). "Cabbage". An essential ingredient in Polish and Slavic cuisine. Most often pickled to make plain sauerkaut ("kapusta kiszona") or mixed with mushrooms, onions, and dill ("kapusta smażona"). Can be mixed with spices and cooked pork ribs, bacon, or smoked kielbasa to make Hunter Stew ("bigos"). Whole cooked cabbage leaves are used to wrap Stuffed Cabbage ("gołąbki"). Can also be shred very thin to make Cabbage Soup ("kapuśniak").
